CLINTOGHLot 4 John Garron Lot 15 Andrew Garron William Garron Lot 16 Thomas Garron Lot 27 James Garron (photocopy enclosed) All of the above named Garron’s do not appear to have held a Lease of their lands from the Marquis of Downshire. Certainly no Lease is referred to in The Estate Ledgers nor was a Garrett/Garron Lease located in the Downshire Estate Leases. As mentioned to you previously other substantial ‘middlemen’ including Cowan, Magill and Mussenden also resided in the search area and it is possible that a Garrett/Garron Lease may have been granted by others including those already mentioned. The entire series of Downshire Estate Lease Books, Ledgers, Rentals and Leases were examined during the present research but no further information pertaining to the above mentioned persons or to Clintogh townland was located. The next reference to Garrett located in the Kilwarlin Estate Ledgers (1778 –1795,1792 – 1805,etc D671/A1/38,40A) relates to James Garrett, farmer who resided in Tullynore townland. His Lease (D/671/48/50) was dated 1 May 1789 and was drawn during the term of the natural lives of James, the Lessee, his son Samuel, then aged 4 years (born c1785) and another. James Garrett, the Lessee was still alive and residing in Tullynore until at least 1827. Sometime around this date James must have died as the annotation ‘dead’ is recorded after 1827. His son Samuel Garrett was also recorded in Tullynore in 1816 and in 1827 respectively. In 1827 Samuel was aged 42 years. The precise date Samuel Garrett of Tullynore died is not known but an annotation recorded in the Downshire Estate Lease Book dated 1816 (D/671/A4/18) records that the Garrett Family of Tullynore Lease expired on the 14 February 1838 on the death of Samuel Garrett. The Downshire Estate Ledgers dated 1813 –1823 and 1824 – 1835 (D/671/A1/54 and D/671/A1/61) record Andrew and Robert Garrett both of whom resided in Ballylintogh. These men also did not have a Lease of their property. They were tenants. The same documents also record William Garrett, Labourer, the Lessee, who resided in Magheraconluce. In 1813 William Garrett, aged 33 years, obtained a Lease drawn during the term of his natural life (this suggests that he may not have been married). This William was still alive in 1816 aged 54 years and was still residing on his farm in Magheraconluce as late as November 1837. This completes this Garrett Summary. See enclosed Appendix re Garret information including some Garret deaths from the records of Civil Registration). 56 <<- Note: this is the page number from original McCabe report BEATTY - GARRETT RESEARCH REPORTMarch 2004County Down Householders Index.
