William Earnest Mars and Rosa Holder

William and Rosa MarsWilliam Earnest Mars was born April 21, 1874. He came from Nashville, Tennessee. He did not know anything about his background, as he was orphaned at a very young age. His father died when he was very small, and he barely remembered his mother. He had a half sister, and thought her name was Florence.

For a time he lived with a man named Jim Logan, then he lived with Andy and Eliza Holder. Andy Holder took a fever, and his wife had to take care of him, so Andy's brother Ben and his wife took Will to live with them. He lived with them until he was 13 years old, then he left and was on his own.

Rosa Holder was born August 30, 1878 in Missouri. Her father, A.J. (Andy) Holder was born 1856, died October 28, 1914. Her mother, Eliza Holder, was born Jan. 21, 1847, died March 10, 1933. Rosa had three brothers and three sisters: Tom Holder, married Mary Newman, born April 19, 1872, died Feb. 23, 1952; Jim Holder, born Aug. 12, 1881 in Kentucky, died May 15, 1945; married Della Pruett. She died 11-27-1951; Joe Holder, married Etta Gilliland; Fannie Elizabeth, born Oct. 17, 1885, died April 29, 1955; married Jim Edwards, 2nd Bill Bailey; Mary, born April 1, 1887, died 12-20-1950, married Arthur Morrison; Bertha, born Oct. 22, 1894, died June 26, 1936, married Bill Carpenter.

Rosa and her family came to Texas by wagon train. Jim Logan, the man who kept Will for a while, operated a boat and helped them cross a river.

Will and Rosa were married July 2, 1900 in Hill County. Will was a farmer. They moved to Coryell County and lived near Mound. They had nine children: Maggie May, born July 27, 1901, died April 21, 1972, married Jahue Richard Beaty; Willie Ethel, born 8-4-1903, married Joe Pruett; Florence Eliza, born 11-23-1905, married Clint Barr; Mary Lucille, born July 20, 1907, married J.D. Nelson; Earnest Andrew, born 10-4-1909, died Oct. 29, 1965; William Hubbard, born June 24, 1911, married Jessie Holder; Arthur Harm, born April 13, 1913, married Ella May Johnson; Fannie Louella, born May 9, 1915, married Clyde McClendon; James Riley, born May 28, 1918, married Jessie Dowell.

Rosa Mars died August 2, 1953. Will Mars died August 6, 1961 . Both are buried at Moody Cemetery. They had 25 grandchildren.
