Manning
The Manning name first occurred in 1066 in Suffock, Kent and Norfolk Counties in England.
John Manning came to Virginia on the "Globe". Thomas Manning landed in 1653 on
the "Primrose". Peter Manning landed in 1635 in Virginia on the
"George." Lazarus Manning arrived in 1635 in Virginia. Our line of Mannings
descended from one of the four men named above. There is a northern and southern branch of
Mannings in America with little mixing of the two.
There is Richard Manning. Sr Richard Manning Jr. 1630-1794. Michael Manning Elizabeth
Watson 1824, Green County Georgia. There were eight children. of whom James Duncan Manning
was the oldest. Elizabeth was 1/2 to 1/4 Cherokee indian.
A group traveling to Texas in 1855 from Nachitoches. Ga to Nacogdoches Texas. There were
three large wagons loaded with furniture, babies and invalids. There were three light
wagons loaded with twenty field hands. They followed the same soil types through Georgia
and Alabama.
There were six brothers in the Civil War and all survived. John Weathers. a
brother-in-law, was killed.
James Duncan Manning enlisted in Texas State Rangers in Coryell County Texas for the
purpose of protection against Indians.
James Duncan Manning married Martha Jane Graham. Jan 21, 1856. He was granted 119 acres of
land near Eliga, Texas. There were thirteen children including two sets of twins. James
Duncan Manning lived at the same place until he died with croup on Feb 7 1892. Martha Jane
Manning died July 23. 1923 at our home in Gatesville.
My father. William Frankin Manning. always known as W.F.
Manning, was the sixth child. He married Phebe Olivia
Powell on Aug 22. 1886. There were six children to their marriage: Mamie (Mrs Craig
Thomas), Marion (Bud) Manning, Elizabeth (Mrs John White), Mattie (Mrs Ernest Cummings),
William Cole Manning and Carrie (Mrs George A. Manning). They lived at several places near
Harmony. The Cowhouse place had a flowing well. The Manning Mountain place (now so
designated in Ft Hood) had three springs on it. We went to Stampede school. In 1919 we
moved to Gatesville, Texas bringing Dad's horse Smokey, a milch cow and chickens. We
rented a barn and garden spot from Granny Sasse.
Most Sundays Mama fixed dinner and we would go back to the Church of Christ at Eliga.
In their later years. Mr and Mrs W.F. Manning moved back near Eliga. Dad died in 1936.
Mama moved back to Gatesville when Ft Hood took over the land. She died in 1963. The
Mannings are buried in Restland Cemetery in Gatesville.
