Hallie Vera Graham - Christopher Columbus Hubbard

Christopher Columbus (Lum) Hubbard was born August 26, 1877 at Crawford, McLennan County. Texas He was the son of John Henry and Susan Elizabeth Dabbs Hubbard. His family moved to Stampede Valley in Coryell County where he met Hallie Vera Graham.

She was born February 24, 1888 at Boaz, Texas. Her father was Abner Graham, one of a family of 14 sons and one daughter of Ozias Denton and Martha Matilda Thornton Graham. Hallie's mother was Martha Jane Graham, oldest daughter of Jesse and Cornelia Griffin Graham. Abner and Martha Jane were 1st cousins and they were united in marriage by their grandfather. When Hallie was twelve years old, her mother died and she and her half brothers and sister, Grover C. Fleming, Theo and Otha Robinett then lived with their grandparents, Jesse and Cornelia.

Hallie and Lum were married February 28. 1904 in her grandparent's home near Browns Creek. Her uncle. Rev. Sylvester Graham performed the ceremony. Lum was a farmer and rancher and also had a large poultry farm. After Hallie's grandparents died they bought their home place and the Brock and Kinsey places.

Hallie and Lum had 10 children: William Hardy born October 22, 1906 at Elija. married Bessie, died September 10, 1944 in Emporia, Kansas; Arthur Algee born July 11. 1908 at Elija, married Mary Othella Van Winkle, died January 22, 1984 in Edmond, Oklahoma; Robert Lee born December 7, 1909 at Elija, married Lucille, died August 27, 1977 in Modesto, California; Vivian Olivia born January 31, 1911 at Browns Creek, married C.T. Russell, lives in El Cajon, California; Floyd Nicholas born September 14, 1912 at Elija, died February 24, 1916; Alma Virtis born February 19, 1914 at Boaz, married Frank Van Winkle, lives in Tracy, California; Infant son born December 17, 1915, died December 19, 1915 at Boaz; Ira Neva born February 1, 1918 at Ruth, married Milton Marlin, lives in Tracy, California twins Loye Christopher born September 27, 1924 at Boaz, lives in Clifton. Texas and Foye Columbus born September 27, 1924 at Boaz, died May 24, 1945.

When Camp Hood took their home and farms, they moved to Shallow Ford. three miles east of Belton on the Leon River where they farmed and operated a sand and gravel business.

During WW II Loye enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Panama. Foye stayed to help on the farm, but refused deferment and on September 3, 1944 he enlisted in the Army. He was with 77th Div. commanded by Gen. A.D. Bruce, formerly of Camp Hood. He was sent to Okinawa and was killed in his first battle on May 24, 1945. His body was brought back to Gatesville and on February 6, 1949 he was buried in Restland Cemetery with full military service.

After the war the family enjoyed getting together on the river for swimming and fishing and when the whole clan came they would have big fish fries.
