Notes from Bob Newsome, Jrn2217@@aol.com:
Charles Nicholas "Nick" Allen was born in Wake County, North Carolina to Reynold Allen and Jane Howell Kennon. He was educated at Trinity College (now Duke University), AB 1861. Nick Allen was a captain in the Confedrate Army and was severely wounded and lost an arm at the Battle of Gettysburg. He married Caroline "Carrie" Virginia Allen of Auburn, NC. Nick and Carrie Johns Allen made their home at the old Johns homeplace near Auburn, North Carolina where Nick Allen was a farmer. Nick Allen was a devoted methodist and a member of Ebenezer Methodist Church. He was instrumental in reviving the church which had disbanded during the Civil War. "Captain Nick", as he was affectionately known, was frequently encouraged to run for public office in Wake County. He always declined and said that he prefered to serve his community from behind the scenes rather than become a public figure. He died at his home in Auburn in 1914.
