William Little Allen, is listed on the Civil War Memorial Monument in Statesville. His Civil War record shows he was a resident of Iredell County and enlisted in Brunswick County at age 25, on May 29, 1861 for the war. He mustered in as a private and was promoted to corporal in January, 1863. Captured near Fredericksburg, Va. on May 3, 1863 and confined at Washington, D.C. until transferred to City Point, Va., where he was received on May 13, 1863 for exchange. Promoted to sgt. prior to Apr. 2, 1864, he was admitted to the hospital at Richmond, Va. June 3, 1 864 with a gunshot wound of the chest; however, the place and date he was wounded was not reported. He was reported absent wounded through August 1864, but rejoined the company prior to April 6, 1865, when he was captured at Farmville, Va. or at Burkeville, Va. He was confined at Newport News, Va. until released on June 30, 1864 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Grandfather carried the bullet from his wound all his life.
